Thomas Chabot and Mathieu Joseph each recorded a goal and an assist to help the Ottawa Senators break their three-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night.

Angus Crookshank, Ridley Greig, and Drake Batherson also found the back of the net, while Brady Tkachuk added two assists for the Senators. Joonas Korpisalo made 18 saves, securing his 16th win of the season.

Jesper Bratt and Tomas Nosek scored for the Devils, whose two-game winning streak was halted, keeping them out of the wild-card playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. New Jersey had scored 17 goals in their previous five games.

Jake Allen stopped 20 shots for the Devils, dropping to 3-2 since being traded from Montreal.

The Senators were trailing 2-1 in the second period before Crookshank, Greig, and Chabot each scored to turn the game around.

“I think we kept our composure,” Joseph said. “Nice moves by Ridley and Angus, and then another goal. We stayed calm on the bench and kept pushing.”

Crookshank gave Ottawa a 3-2 lead after Greig tied the game at 4:10 of the second period. The Senators’ three goals in the second came on just seven shots.

The teams combined for four goals in the first 6:02 of the second period. Nosek and Bratt scored 36 seconds apart to give New Jersey a 2-1 lead early in the period, but the Devils couldn’t hold onto it.

“I thought we had a good game and a good first period,” said Ottawa interim head coach Jacques Martin. “We had two turnovers that cost us early in the second, but I liked our resiliency. We played correctly, used the whole bench, and our penalty kill did a great job.”

New Jersey went 0 for 4 on the power play, managing only two shots on goal.

With Ottawa short-handed, Joseph opened the scoring at 4:56 of the first period, taking advantage of an errant pass from New Jersey’s Erik Haula to score from the right circle. It was Ottawa’s fifth short-handed goal this season and the 50th time in 71 games that New Jersey allowed the first goal.

The Devils turned the puck over 10 times.

“We didn’t play well at all,” admitted Devils interim head coach Travis Green. “We weren’t ready for their speed. It’s hard to get any traction when you can’t make two passes in a row.

“We had some turnovers we’d like to have back, but that was only part of it. Individually, we didn’t play up to our capabilities.”
