The New Jersey Devils announced that forward Jack Hughes will be out of the lineup with a non-hockey-related hand injury. According to the Devils, Hughes will be evaluated, and an update will be provided when it is available.

However, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Jack Hughes suffered a hand injury at a team dinner on Thursday, following the Devils’ 4-3 overtime victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night. As Friedman notes, “exact details are unknown at this time, but it is believed he slipped and cut his hand, in what multiple sources are calling a ‘fluke accident.'”

The New Jersey Devils are back in action Saturday night against the Washington Capitals, and Hughes will not be in the lineup. It is unclear how long he will be out until further evaluations can be done.

Simon Nemec Continues Growth for the New Jersey Devils

New Jersey is off to a great start with a record of 12-4-1 through 17 games as they sit atop the Eastern Conference and Metro Division with 25 points. Jack Hughes himself was also off to a great start with 20 points (10 goals and 10 assists) in those 17 games.

Since entering the league, Jack Hughes has played close to 82 games in his career. That was the 22-23 season, where he finished with 99 points (43 goals and 56 assists) in 78 games. The Devils went to the playoffs that year and lost to the Carolina Hurricanes in five games in Round 2 after New Jersey knocked off the New York Rangers in Round 1 in seven games.

For the most part, he has only played around 60 a season, and those major injuries have derailed not only his season, but the Devils season as well. He has also dealt with minor injuries, which have caused him to miss time.

Last year, Jack Hughes underwent shoulder surgery on March 5th, 2025, after he injured himself in a game against the Vegas Golden Knights on March 2nd, 2025, ending his 24-25 season. Remember, he dislocated his shoulder in October 2021, which caused him to miss significant time and ended his season prematurely.

Devils Jack Hughes Lost For The Season, Does This Change Trade Deadline Plans?

The Devils are already dealing with injuries to Johnathan Kovacevic, Brett Pesce, Dougie Hamilton, Zack MacEwen, Cody Glass, and Connor Brown. This is a significant blow to an offense that was finding its groove. Once again, it is next man up for the New Jersey Devils.

Everyone is holding their breath, not only in the Devils organization, but also in the management staff for Team USA, which includes Tom Fitzgerald. Many are hoping it is not a significant injury, but until further tests are run, Jack Hughes is out at least for the Washington game, if not more.
