Jakob Chychrun scored 4:06 into overtime, and Logan Thompson turned aside 35 shots as the Washington Capitals edged the New Jersey Devils 4–3 on Saturday night.
Chychrun’s 15th goal of the season slipped past Jake Allen in the extra period, giving Washington just its second win in eight games. New Jersey, meanwhile, dropped its third straight.
Aliaksei Protas finished with a goal and two assists. At the same time, Anthony Beauvillier and Alex Ovechkin also scored for the Capitals, who have now gone 11-1-0 in their last 12 games at Prudential Center.
Washington carried a 2–1 lead into the third period, but the Devils briefly surged ahead with two goals in 32 seconds. Ovechkin erased that advantage at 9:17, tying the game with his 15th goal of the season and the 912th of his historic career.
Jesper Bratt, who had scored just once since early November, found the net twice for New Jersey. Cody Glass added a goal for the Devils, who have now lost 13 of their last 20 games.
Protas dramatically opened the scoring, tipping in an Ovechkin pass with less than a second remaining in the first period. Bratt answered on the power play at 4:56 of the second, but Beauvillier restored Washington’s lead late in the period.
Bratt struck again early in the third to tie it, and Glass followed moments later to put New Jersey in front. Ovechkin’s equalizer forced overtime, setting the stage for Chychrun’s winner.
Allen finished with 29 saves in the loss. The Capitals were rebounding from a lopsided defeat to the Rangers earlier in the week, while the Devils entered the night following consecutive losses to the Islanders and Sabres.
