John Gibson and Cam Talbot teamed up for a 31-save shutout as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the New Jersey Devils 3-0 on Sunday night.
Dominik Shine scored his first career NHL goal, while Moritz Seider and James van Riemsdyk also found the net for Detroit. The victory ended the Red Wings’ two-game skid and snapped New Jersey’s four-game winning streak as Detroit began a four-game road trip.
Gibson turned aside 21 shots over the first two periods before leaving the game late in the second after a crease collision. Talbot stepped in and stopped all 10 shots he faced in the third period. The duo became the first Detroit goaltending tandem to combine for a shutout since Jonas Gustavsson and Jimmy Howard accomplished the feat in 2014.
Seider opened the scoring with a wrist shot just 3:20 into the first period. Van Riemsdyk doubled Detroit’s lead during a power play at 6:37 of the second when he redirected a point shot past Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom.
Shine added an insurance goal midway through the third period, firing a snap shot with 9:36 remaining. The 32-year-old forward was appearing in just his fifth NHL game of the season and the 14th of his career.
Defenseman Justin Faulk also made his Red Wings debut after being acquired from the St. Louis Blues on Friday.
Markstrom finished with 27 saves for New Jersey, which was playing the fourth game of a seven-game homestand. The Devils entered the matchup following a 6-3 win over the New York Rangers on Saturday, highlighted by a Jack Hughes hat trick.
