Drake Batherson scored in overtime, securing a 5-4 victory for the Ottawa Senators against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.
Batherson also netted a goal in regulation, with Tim Stutzle scoring twice and Thomas Chabot adding another for Ottawa. Brady Tkachuk contributed three assists, and Anton Forsberg made 37 saves.
Nolan Foote scored twice for the Devils, who extended their losing streak to four games. Pavel Zacha and Yegor Sharangovich also found the back of the net.
Mackenzie Blackwood, making his first start since January 19, stopped 29 shots for the Devils.
Stutzle electrified the crowd of 13,101 with his first short-handed goal, outpacing Reilly Walsh. Less than a minute later, Zacha scored to reduce Ottawa’s lead to 4-3 at the seven-minute mark of the third period.
The Devils completed their comeback when Sharangovich scored with ample time and space, forcing the game into overtime.
Batherson scored his 16th goal of the season just 11 seconds into the second period, giving the Senators a 2-0 lead.
The Devils scored on a nice pass from Fabian Zetterlund to Foote, who scored his first goal of the season.
A few minutes later, the Senators made it 3-1 with their second power-play goal as Stutzle capitalized on a rebound from Tkachuk.
Foote scored his second goal with 5.2 seconds left in the period, beating Ottawa’s Mark Kastelic to a rebound at the side of the net.
The Senators opened the scoring with 16.9 seconds left in the first period when Tkachuk made a cross-crease pass to Chabot, who knocked in his seventh goal of the season.
Game Notes: The Senators will finish the season without Matt Murray, Connor Brown, Colin White, and Mathieu Joseph. New Jersey recalled Reilly Walsh from Utica of the American Hockey League. The Devils’ Nico Hischier missed a second straight game with a non-COVID-19 illness.
