Sam Carrick scored in overtime, and Igor Shesterkin made 21 saves to lead the New York Rangers to a 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night.
Carrick’s game-winning goal came at 2:48 of the extra period when he one-timed a pass from Reilly Smith past Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom. It was Carrick’s third goal of the season and helped the Rangers notch an important home win before embarking on a three-game road trip.
Adam Fox and Artemi Panarin also scored for New York, which has won two of its last three games.
Jesper Bratt and Jack Hughes found the back of the net for New Jersey, which has now lost five of its last six games.

Shesterkin, returning after a four-game stint on injured reserve, made a crucial save on Dawson Mercer’s short-handed breakaway in the third period to keep the game tied and set the stage for Carrick’s overtime heroics.
Markstrom stopped 29 shots for the Devils.
