One of the bigger stories when the NHL resumes play in September, outside of the Connor McDavid extension with the Edmonton Oilers, is what will happen with Quinn Hughes and the Vancouver Canucks.

Devils Rumors: Does It Make Sense For New Jersey To Trade for Quinn Hughes?

The speculation surrounding Hughes and the Canucks was fueled by President Jim Rutherford telling the media that he wanted to play with his brothers. Whether that was on another team or in Vancouver remained to be seen. However, everyone knows that the New Jersey Devils are not trading center Jack Hughes or defenseman Luke Hughes to Vancouver. So that means Quinn Hughes would be heading to New Jersey.

And when would he head to the Devils? Well, James Mirtle of The Athletic thinks it will be next season, as the Devils can offer him a massive contract extension before the new CBA rules take effect because of the cap space they will have during the 2027-28 season.

And while everyone can speculate about Quinn Hughes and his future with the Vancouver Canucks, calling him the elephant in the room, the captain of the team has yet to decide what his future holds with the club. Rutherd and GM Patrik Allvin can address the media and make comments all they want, but until the player decides what is best for his future, nothing will happen.

Everyone Needs To Pump The Brakes on Quinn Hughes to the Devils Talk

Hughes still has two years left on his deal and isn’t eligible to sign an extension until next July 1st. There is still time to see what this team is like under the new head coach, Adam Foote. And that is the thing, the player and team will be patient. They don’t have to rush into anything because the Canucks are looking to bounce back and make the playoffs.

As Rob Simpson of VancouverHockeyInsider.com said on the Full Press NHL Podcast, what is the rush? Even though the bond between the Hughes Brothers is strong, the parties are not going to tip their hand now. While he could end up East, it all comes down to the season the Vancouver Canucks have.

Yeah. I mean, what’s the rush? You got a whole season to see what the hell is going on with this hockey club over this next whole season before you even have to think about making that decision. And his agent, Pat Brisson, he’s not going to give anything away. He’s like, I’m not doing a damn thing. I’ve got a billion dollars in contracts with JP Barry for a reason, and I’m just gonna, we’re gonna sit and wait and see. Rmemember Petey (Elias Pettersson) and Quinn Hughes both sat out camp held out sin 21.

So they’re not afraid and this is business for them, and the love between those brothers that is a strong factor here. I mean, Quinn Hughes could definitely head east once he sees what’s going on with the Canucks here over this next season, and then you’ve got a season of like, hand-wringing in Vancouver, but tough beans, that’s up to him, not to the fans or the media.

So that’s a ways off. They can talk about it and be nervous about it and be scared about it and talk about the implications once a week, if they want to, but it’s not going to make any difference until summer.

So, until Quinn Hughes informs the Vancouver Canucks of his intentions, he remains a member of the team and is looking to help the club return to the playoffs. And who says the player doesn’t sign an extension with the club, similar to Brock Boeser and Elias Pettersson?

Could Quinn Hughes Actually Come to New Jersey and Play with His Brothers?

Remember, Boeser was out the door until he wasn’t. It seems like everyone is falling into that trap again, assuming Quinn Hughes is gone based on a silly comment. And what if he is comfortable in Vancouver? There is a chance he hits it big next summer with the Canucks.

Again, all options are on the table. But if the Devils do try to trade for Quinn Hughes next summer, it will cost them a pretty penny.
