The New Jersey Devils and goaltender Jacob Markstrom have agreed to a two-year extension, keeping their tandem intact.

The New Jersey Devils announced they have agreed to a new two-year contract extension with goaltender Jacob Markstrom.

NHL Rumors: New Jersey Devils Want To Extend Jacob Markstrom Long-Term

Markstrom’s new deal is worth $12 million in total and carries an annual average value of $6 million.

Markstrom’s new deal with the Devils carries the same AAV he got when he signed his current deal, which is set to expire at the end of the season. In October 2020, Markstrom signed a six-year, $36 million contract, paying him $6 million per season.

The Devils acquired Markstrom from the Flames in June 2024 for Kevin Bahl and a 2025 first-round draft pick. Devils President and General Manager Tom Fitzgerald had been targeting Markstrom all season. He circled him, and that was his guy. Now he has one of the best tandems in the game when both are healthy.

The plan from the start was always to extend Jacob Markstrom once he was eligible on July 1st, 2025. However, this was a tricky negotiation for Fitzgerald and the Devils. It was a balancing act to determine the sweet spot for both the team and the player.

Initial reports had him seeking $20 million and a four-year contract, about $5 million per season. As Pierre LeBrun of TSN noted, Markstrom wanted the dollars spread out over more years, but the Devils had to get creative and go for a higher-dollar value in a short-term deal.

The parties had put talks on hold until Markstrom recovered from the injury he suffered when he came in for relief of Jake Allen against the Columbus Blue Jackets at the beginning of October. While his numbers are not significant to start with — thanks in part to just coming back from an injury — he has a 2-2 record with a 5.13 GAA and an .830 save percentage, and he is a proven goalie in the NHL.

Markstrom has shown that once he gets into a groove, he can be in the conversation for the Vezina Trophy. He was in that conversation last year, before an injury that kept him out for 2 to 3 weeks in the second half of the season, forcing him to miss Sweden’s Four Nations Faceoff.

However, he helped guide the Devils along with Allen and Nico Daws to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Markstrom finished with a record of 26-16-6 with a 2.50 GAA and a .900 save percentage. Without Jacob Markstrom, the Devils might have gotten swept by the Carolina Hurricanes in Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

While many thought, based on the reports, it would be a long-term deal, the Devils found a way to get creative and showed that long-term meant short-term with Jacob Markstrom. The Devils are in a window to win and make deep playoff runs. This was the tandem Fitzgerald was always going to run with.

Plus, Markstrom stated at the end of the season that he wanted to come to New Jersey because he thought this team gave him the best chance to win.
