The Hughes Brothers (Jack Hughes and Quinn Hughes) will finally be teammates, but it will not be for the New Jersey Devils. Instead, they will be teammates with Team USA at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina.
New Jersey Devils See Eight Players Heading to the Olympics
The two brothers were supposed to play together at the Four Nations, but Quinn Hughes was injured right before the tournament and, despite all efforts, was not cleared by his former team, the Vancouver Canucks. So the dream of playing together on the same team was put on hold.
Many thought it would happen with the Devils when Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford told the media in the spring that Quinn Hughes wanted to play with his brothers. Despite the Canucks’ efforts to send him East and possibly to the Devils, it was never in the cards. The Devils never had the assets or the cap space to compete with the Minnesota Wild’s trade offer for the eldest Hughes Brother.
However, while the dream of playing together in the NHL is on pause for now, the Brothers’ dream of playing together on the US National Team remains alive.
“I mean, we’ve always wanted to play together, whether it’s in the NHL or on a US national team,” Luke Hughes told the media after his brother Quinn Hughes was traded to the Minnesota Wild. “You never know what can happen. We have a lot of years left in our careers.”
“Honestly, I’m not afraid to say it. Yeah, I would love for Quinn to — eventually I’d love to play with him,” Jack Hughes said back in September. “And whether that’s in New Jersey or at what time that takes, at some point I want to play with Quinn.”
