Simon Nemec delivered the decisive goal just 1:18 into overtime Monday night, lifting the New Jersey Devils to a 2-1 win over the Calgary Flames.

Nemec finished off a backhand feed from Jack Hughes, sliding a close-range shot past goaltender Devin Cooley to seal the victory. The goal capped a strong bounce-back effort for New Jersey following a 4-1 home loss to Carolina and marked the Devils’ third win in four games.

Dawson Mercer opened the scoring midway through the second period for New Jersey, but Calgary responded less than two minutes later when Nazem Kadri tied it. Rookie Matvei Gridin earned his first NHL assist on Kadri’s goal.

In the end, Jacob Markstrom turned aside 21 shots to earn the win against his former team. Cooley made 29 saves for the Flames, whose two-game winning streak came to an end.

The Devils faced a scare in the second period when defenseman Luke Hughes exited after appearing shaken up during a board battle.

For Calgary, defenseman Zach Whitecloud made his Flames debut after being acquired from Vegas over the weekend. He logged more than 22 minutes of ice time, recording two shots and three blocked shots in his first game with the club.
