A brief lapse early in the third period proved costly for the New Jersey Devils, who fell 4-2 to the Seattle Kraken on Sunday night after surrendering two goals just 18 seconds apart.
Matty Beniers and Berkly Catton delivered the decisive strikes for Seattle, while Joey Daccord finished with 27 saves. Ryker Evans and Jordan Eberle also scored for the Kraken.
Dougie Hamilton and Jack Hughes accounted for the Devils’ offense. Jacob Markstrom made 15 saves in his sixth start over New Jersey’s last seven games. Despite the loss, the Devils wrapped up their four-game Pacific Division road trip with a solid 3-1-0 record.
Hamilton opened the scoring 8:11 into the first period, wiring a power-play shot past Daccord for his sixth goal of the season. The defenseman continues to heat up, recording eight points over his last nine games.
Seattle evened the game late in the second when Evans’ point shot deflected off Johnathan Kovacevic’s stick and slipped through Markstrom’s pads with traffic in front.
The turning point came early in the third. Beniers put Seattle ahead at 7:04, and Catton followed moments later at 7:22 to suddenly give the Kraken a two-goal advantage.
Hughes answered quickly for New Jersey, scoring a power-play goal at 8:14 after the puck deflected off Adam Larsson’s leg, but the Devils couldn’t draw even. Eberle sealed the outcome with an empty-net goal with 1:12 remaining, his 18th of the season.
