Jack Hughes and Connor Brown each recorded a goal and two assists as the New Jersey Devils defeated the New York Rangers 6-3 on Wednesday night, extending their winning streak to three games.
New Jersey, currently 10 points behind the final Eastern Conference wild-card spots, opened a five-game road trip after posting a 5-2 record during its recent homestand.
Nico Hischier and Jesper Bratt each added a goal and an assist, while Arseny Gritsyuk and Timo Meier also scored for the Devils. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom made 14 saves.
For the Rangers, Vladislav Gavrikov, Mika Zibanejad, and Conor Sheary found the net, while Jonathan Quick finished with 33 saves. New York, last in the Eastern Conference, has now lost two straight after previously winning four in a row.
Brown gave the Devils a 3-2 lead late in the second period, scoring on the power play with 8:24 remaining after taking a pass from Hughes and firing a quick shot past Quick from the slot.
Meier extended the advantage to 4-2 early in the third period with his 19th goal of the season. Sheary responded for the Rangers, but Hughes restored the two-goal cushion with 6:55 left, scoring on a wrist shot. Bratt added an insurance goal with just under four minutes remaining, with Hughes picking up his 36th assist on the play.
Zibanejad had tied the game 2-2 just 19 seconds into the second period, beating Markstrom from the high slot on New York’s third shot of the night.
The Devils controlled the first period, outshooting the Rangers 17-2 and taking a 2-1 lead. Gavrikov opened the scoring, but Hischier tied it on the power play, and Gritsyuk gave New Jersey the lead late in the period.
